A few examples of the larger than life icons that represent the decades around the Pop Century Resort. There are many more than I have pictured here, but this gives you a good feel for the place.
You can also see the bowling pin pool in the foreground of this shot.

We LOVE the POP! We stayed in the 60's building down by the Mickey phone. It faced onto the lake and was not noisy at all. We had a family of ducks that greeted us every morning. The bridge is a great place to relax and is also a good vantage point for photos. The buses only serve the POP, so you don't have to share them with other resorts like you do at the AllStars. The theming is way cool! I'm sorry to say we recognized all of the memorabilia on display in the lobby. We may even have some of duplicate pieces up in our Attic!
The food court and gift shop kind of blend together in one space, but it's convenient. It does get busy in the am, so go early to avoid the rush. We enjoyed the BluePlate Specials during the week. By all means get yourself a refillable mug. It's always our first purchase when we check in. Park as close to your room as you can. We didn't find the walking bad, but we like to walk.and make our plans accordingly. Once we get there and park the truck, it stays there till we leave. As we see it, we're on vacation and not on a strict schedule. RELAX please!!!!
All of the pools are pretty cool too-not that weve ever been in any of them! I always take my swim suit and bring it back unworn. The Computer pool seems to be the least crowded- at least in May. We prefer to beat the heat and the School crowds. Since it's just the two of us we have that particular luxury! We also enjoy the Flower and Garden Festival at that time.
Lots and lots of photo ops too. Don't miss the PotatoHeads by the 90's building!
I could go on, but I'll let you do your own exploring for more treasures!
I well be staying at the Pop for Mouse Fest. Which building is the best to stay in or try to get?
Wow...really old post to reply to, but I hope it still helps, Greg! The closest buildings to the Classic Hall are the 60's buildings (which are buildings #4 and 5). There are also parts of the 50's and 70's buildings that are very close (buildings #1 and 3 in the 50's; buildings #0 and 6 in the 70's). Of course, these areas are probably Preferred rooms which you will only get if you pay extra per night. If you prefer quieter rooms, the 80's and 90's buildings (#7, 8 and 9) are farther away, as is building #2 in the 50's.

I added a video to the first post of the thread. Now that we have our videos working properly within the posts, the WDB leadership team will be adding the videos to each of the resorts (or particular topics) in the first threads for informational purposes
I haven't visited Pop Century yet...and, with being DVC members I'm not sure that we will in the near future. But, it's fun to look at the different options that all Disney fans have when traveling to any of the Disney resorts!
what happened that they didnt finish that?? What a waste!
9/11 happened. I am pretty sure I remember that in the post 9/11 days the entire Pop Century project was abandoned. It was later picked up, but only the 50s to the 90s- which I am guessing has to do with money, and still lower attendance rates post 9/11.
I would love to see the Legendary Years finished as Family Suites- like the ones that are very hard to get over at ASM. Families of 5 & 6 do not have many low cost options. I think the suites would be hugely popular, and hardly ever empty.
I remember it being vacant. We were staying at AKL several times back then and my (old) memory is they completed Phase One but did not open it on schedule due to low attendance overall. During that same time they shut down Port Orleans and rehab'd a long time. Ultimately re-opening as a consolidated resort.
Phase II-My gut is something is "wrong" with the resort/land. Pop is just to popular to have left it in the nearly completed phase uncompleted. They are not even trying to maintain it. I truly wonder if there was something wrong with the steel, concrete or worse something within the soil/water table. It is so Un-Disney to fence it off and leave an eye-sore, overgrown, bridge crudely blocked off. I cannot imagine the Board allowing it to just crumble without a darn good reason. They could use it as a primary for Pop Warner/Cheerleaders, Band Groups, etc. seasonally. It just doesn't make sense. The lack of solid information just leads me to be more cynical. Look at how long it took to hear about soil underneath the submarines at the MK and how long we wondered why it was left relatively untouched all these years.
I never heard anything about the soil under the submarines - only that part of the Utilidor was under the lagoon, and it leaked down into the Wardrobe department (don't know if that is true, I think I might have read that on a web site somewhere).
Anyway, back to the abandoned buildings at the Pop - wasn't there other construction going on at approximately the same time, for Saratoga Springs? Maybe they only had enough money to finish one project, and decided to go with the one that would pull in better room rates, not to mention DVC memeberships.
I'll go back and try and find the info on the subs and the leaking story.
I'm am being cynical about Phase II. I just can't plait the idea of letting a nearly finish project, bridges, roads, curbs, door, windows etc. in and not finish it off like they did Phase I. By the pictures out there, there are only the final touches left, the majority of money has already been invested. Odd. They have invested so much money into other hotels since then and Pop is very popular so it isn't a lack of interest. I just think something is weird and so un-Disney to openly Abandon a major project. Can you imagine if they just stopped the DVC Contemporary project?
