A Bloody Good Time at Universal Orlando's 2008 Halloween Horror Nights Creative Director's Dream Job Is to Give Us Nightmares
By Arthur Levine, About.com
Aug 28 2008
He looks unassuming enough. And when he talks dotingly about his two young daughters, he seems like your typical all-American dad. His black T-shirt with classic movie monsters however, should be a tip-off. How many all-American dads develop bizarre rituals in which a seemingly hapless park "volunteer" is plucked from a crowd only to have her throat slit and her writhing body dumped into a pit?
It would be interesting to hear how Michael Roddy answers his daughters' dinner-table questions when they ask him how work was that day. Roddy, 40, is manager of show development at Universal Orlando and creative director of its annual Halloween Horror Nights. The soft-spoken maestro of the macabre sat down to talk about the art of scaring the snot out of people.
Unlike most park's Halloween events, which present a collection of unrelated haunted mazes, Universal builds its Halloween Horror Nights around an elaborate unifying theme. For example, past Halloween Horror Nights have featured fully developed characters such as The Director, a demented auteur hell bent on making all too real horror movies.
The Mirror Image of Bloody Mary
For the 2008 version of Universal's horror-thon, Roddy says he and his team wanted to explore disturbing urban legends, myths, and folklore. One of the most enduring, and perhaps most disturbing myths is Bloody Mary. According to legend, believers go to a mirror, turn out the lights, say her name three times, and--cue the crescendo--Bloody Mary appears in the mirror. (Clive Barker loosely co-opted the myth for his 1992 film, "Candyman.")
The appeal of Bloody Mary, says Roddy, is that her story is simple and deeply personal. "It's a test of will," he notes. "It's something you do by yourself." While the legend of Bloody Mary is widely known, her character was a blank slate.
Universal's horror mavens created a back-story in which a slightly unhinged doctor named Mary treated patients consumed by phobias with immersion therapy. If facing their fears became too much, the safe word to end the treatments was to call out her name three times. The therapist would watch the sessions from behind a one-way mirror.
The doctor, it seems, had her own fear of death. To face her fear, a progressively more unhinged Mary ended up ignoring her patients' pleas to end their treatments so that she could--cue the crescendo--watch them die. One day, however, a patient broke free and killed the doctor by pulling her through the mirror. "She's now trapped in the mirror," explains Roddy, with a mischievous grin. At this year's Halloween Horror Nights, "She's bringing you through her mirror into her world."
I Have a Feeling We're not in Disney Anymore
One of the event's eight haunted mazes will focus on Bloody Mary, but her presence will be felt throughout Halloween Horror Nights. The other mazes will explore phobias as well as other myths and folklore. "Mary's the one bringing it all together," says Roddy. But, unlike past characters such as The Director, there won't be a Bloody Mary character walking around. That may have something to do with her otherworldly predicament. "Every time she is summoned, it hurts" Roddy says. "When she bursts through the mirror, shards of glass give her gashes. It's a painful birthing for her." Yup, this guy is definitely not your typical dad.
In addition to the mazes, Halloween Horror Nights is known for its detailed scare zones. Roddy says that this year's event will feature the most street experiences, including Asylum in Wonderland, a manic spin on Alice's Adventures (the looking glass connection seems apropos for Bloody Mary), and "The Path of the Wicked," which explores what might have happened if the Wicked Witch emerged victorious in the Land of Oz. Both scare zones, and Halloween Horror Nights itself, for that matter, embody Universal's I-have-a-feeling-we're-not-in-Disney-anymore ethos. While the Magic Kingdom has Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, Universal is perfectly happy, driven even, to scare the hell out of you.
Last year, Universal tapped movie franchises such as "Friday the 13th" for its icons. What's particularly impressive about this year's event is that it features all original content. And that a core team of four, including Roddy, creates all of the content. It's a year-round process, and the team is already working on the 2009 and 2010 events. How do they come up with themes such as Bloody Mary? It's quite simple, actually. "We ask ourselves whether it would scare us," says Roddy with a laugh. "If it bothers us, we're pretty sure it's going to bother the general public." And, he says the decidedly PG-13 event walks right up to and dances around the boundary between a good scare and good taste.
Creature Features
By the time the haunted mazes open their creaky doors to bother the general public each fall, the crew swells to some 1500 people. "It's like a military campaign," Roddy says, referring to the incredible logistics that go into transforming the daytime Universal Studios Florida into Halloween Horror Nights. "An army goes out with body parts and crates of ghoulish accessories."
Roddy's been one of Halloween Horror Nights' military commanders for 13 years. But it's a job he's been training for most of his life. His earliest memories include being petrified by the creature features on Saturday television--and loving being petrified by them. In the first grade, he staged his own production of "Abbott and Costello Meets Frankenstein." (Hmm. Might that be the theme for an upcoming Halloween Horror Nights?) "I guess I have my dream job," Roddy says with an impish smile.
His daughters, who are around the age when Roddy first found his odd passion, recently snuggled with their father to watch their first horror film, Universal's classic "Frankenstein." He says that his kids sometimes brag about his Halloween Horror Nights work, and that when their friends come over to play they are relieved to find Roddy to be a typical suburban dad instead of the axe-wielding zombie psychopath they've conjured in their mind. While he seems completely harmless however, the friends may want to think twice before going by themselves into one of the Roddy's darkened rooms with a mirror.

HHN Construction Updates
Fear Factor Live closed to make way for Bill and Ted's show
Props start to appear in the street for scarezones. This one is American Gothic. Many HHN fans comment how it looks exactly like Blood Masquerade, which was the scarezone in this same area 2 years ago.
Re: Halloween Horror Nights 08 - Reflections of Fear
Yup, that's the point of the scarezones. They're themed sections out in the park where characters scare or interact with you. I've been through Blood Masq. several times in '06 (snuck through it during my breaks while working that year there) and wasn't too thrilled with it. It was highly predictable, and didn't deliver that many scares. The did have this one really cool scare in that scarezone that I haven't seen personally, but have heard about, and it was one of the vampires on this bungee contraption that literally pops out in front of you, and then quickly snaps back and disappears. I could picture an angry farmer with a pitchfork on bungee cords now, lol!
Re: Halloween Horror Nights 08 - Reflections of Fear
I just watched through the entire web site that they have for this, including ride descriptions and such. This looks like it will be an incredible event, and if you like being scared, it might be the place to be for the Halloween season. I hope that someone goes, and comes back with a complete trip report.

Moms to Universal Orlando: 'Bloody Mary' billboards too horrible
Scott Powers
Sentinel Staff Writer
September 4, 2008
Universal Orlando hoped its "Bloody Mary" campaign would turn a few heads on Interstate 4 -- but some people are turning away from the resort's billboards.
For this year's Halloween Horror Nights festivities, Universal Orlando promised an "in-your-face" advertising campaign, with billboards the company vowed would seek new levels of provocativeness.
No thanks, some drivers are saying.
One group, called Metro Orlando Mommies, says Universal has gone too far. The Mommies are pushing to get the company to tone down the ads, particularly the violent, sometimes bloody images.
Last week, Universal put up 80 billboards advertising its 18th annual Halloween Horror Nights, which start Sept. 26. This year's after-hours, special-ticket horror-fest highlights scary urban legends and uses a character known as "Bloody Mary" as its iconic image. In urban legends, Bloody Mary is a ghost who can be summoned through mirrors. The billboards, along with other Halloween Horror Nights advertising, feature a broken mirror and a ghoulish Mary figure, sometimes dripping blood.
Metro Orlando Mommy Erin Heston, 33, who lives in downtown Orlando and has two children, Brock, almost 3, and Molly, 9 months, wrote Universal this week urging the company to take down the more graphic billboards and to limit its TV advertising to late-night programs.
"Each year, I grow more frustrated and disappointed by the choices Universal makes in advertising this event, which glamorizes violence and human cruelty," she wrote. "This year, I find the billboards truly unacceptable to our community."
Universal insists it is staying within the range of what is acceptable to the community. In recent years, Universal's campaign has featured such ghoulish characters as "Jack the Evil Clown," "The Storyteller," "The Director" and "The Caretaker."
"We want them to be fun and entertaining -- and communicate what the event is about," spokesman Michael Lewellen said. "Our approach is consistent with what we've done throughout the 18-year history of Halloween Horror Nights. But we also know there may be other opinions about our billboards -- and we respect those opinions."
Mommy Katy Leach, 29, of Winter Park said the first time her son Gavin, nearly 3, saw the billboard near Fairbanks Avenue she had a hard time explaining it to him. That was OK, she thought. But a couple of days later, out of the blue, he asked about it again. That was creepy -- that the image had stayed with him, she said. And the billboard is there, every time they get on I-4.
"I can't choose not to see it. . . . It's there, in my face," she said.
Lewellen said the company was monitoring reaction, but so far complaints were few. Bottom line: People are talking, he said.
Advertisers like that.
OrlandoSentinel.com
Every year someone has to whine or complain about the event, and chances are they've never been there to see what it's all about. Yeah, it's gonna be creepy and scary, sometimes gorey and graphic, but it's all in good fun. The scareactors playing the roles of these masked murderers have fun scaring the general public, while the general public love to be walking through recreated scenes of their favorite horror movies or nightmares. Why would anyone want to go to this event? To have fun being scared out of your mind in a safe atmosphere, and even though I'm sure just about everyone knows it's all fake, they still get scared and come out of the haunted houses with big grins on their faces after they've gone through the beautifully themed houses full of spooks.
As for the ads, I haven't seen them yet since I don't do much driving anymore *grumble* but I know for a fact they won't do anything that will cross the line, and chances are it'll look like a scene from the HHN website, probably front page even. It's something that'll obviously get your attention and want to know more about it, and check out the awesome website. Even if the billboards aren't as graphic as these whiney parents say, I'm glad that the point being made out of them is "this event is NOT for kids" which could lead to another rant, but I'll hold off on that one for now
Re: Halloween Horror Nights 08 - Reflections of Fear
I'll tell ya, some people have nothing better to do than complain. The billboard that is pictured, is nothing bad at all, a little creepy yes, but isn't that what you would want for an advertisement about a scary event?
Re: Halloween Horror Nights 08 - Reflections of Fear
Here's a pic of the big billboards, and they light up at night
I guess I could see how some moms could be upset with it, but then again, they probably would be upset with most of the programing on TV, their local news, other billboards in the area, the list can go on. I don't see anything wrong with it, other than making me want to check out the website featured at the bottom. I think they did a good job putting this event together, coming up with a fantastic new icon, and then advertising it as normal in hopes to draw in the crowds Universal desperately needs. HHN is a real money-maker for Universal, pretty much the only money-maker they have for now, and they want to make sure they get the point across that you definately don't want to miss this event!
Re: Halloween Horror Nights 08 - Reflections of Fear
That is definitely a creepy billboard, and I can understand their stand, but my son would not be affected by these at all and he is 4 1/2. He has been introduced to all of this stuff and gets it. Don't shield your kids, expose them to everything and they won't be so skiddish. That's what I have found at least.
Re: Halloween Horror Nights 08 - Reflections of Fear
Exactly, that's why there's so much problem with today's kids, is that parents are trying to be too protective. Yeah, the billboard is creepy, but it isn't real, it's just for entertainment purposes only. Let your kids know there is a difference between what happens in movies and cartoons, and what happens in real life, and they'll understand. It's parents like these who want Harry Potter banned from school libraries because they promote 'the dark arts' or cancel classic cartoons such as Tom and Jerry ,even though they still play that today, you don't see any new cartoons as violent as them. What people need to understand is that they cannot change the world, the only way they can make a difference is if they change themselves and how they parent their kids, which would hopefully make the world a better place, therefore actually changing the world. I'm gonna take a nap before I come up with another deep thought, that one wore me out.

Reflect upon your own mortality as you venture through history with the infamous Lizzie Borden as your guide.
Streets of Blood – Body Collectors

These mysterious “Quiet Gentlemen” are now in Victorian London, covering their heinous acts with Jack “The Ripper” as their scapegoat. But, there is no “Ripper”…There are only Collectors, collecting, collecting, collecting…

Zombies
Bloodthirsty Zombies lurk through the streets, hungry for their next victims.
HOUSES

The Evil Queen’s scribes have written new chapters on terror where princesses don’t get saved, children don’t find their way out of the wood and there is no escape from the rabbit hole.
The Hallow
Where do the traditions we observe each Halloween come from? It is said that every Halloween within the blackest parts of the forest, Samhain, The Lord of the Underworld, lives again and the souls of the damned beckon you. For if you journey deep enough, you will see that Samhain’s traditions are trapped within The Hallow.

Unfortunately for us, Dr. Mary’s fear is that of death and the only way for her to cure herself is to watch the light leave your eyes as your soul leaves your body.
