What is it with people that are so fascinated with backstage areas? What makes your tourist senses all tingly inside when you catch a glimpse of what's backstage as the door slowly closes shut? Is there something you think there may be fascinating behind those closed doors?

I like to know how things work, what makes things tick... and especially, if the rumors are true. You hear all about the Utilidors, but hearing about them does not replace actually seeing them with your own eyes.

Well...let's see. I saw a headless Robin Hood taking a smoke break. I smelled the mustiness of the Utilidors. I got to see the Spectro floats up close--parked and without the lights on. I saw a poster showing CMs the ideal Disney Look. Oh, and I saw the gigantic trash handling system. Good times!

So, what if you can see all the backstage stuff without being told no, and how it's really not that big of a deal, not that exciting, would you still be excited about the backstage areas?

I think the "unknown factor" does play a huge part in it, and I do remember before I was a CM, that there was that unknown factor as in "where does this door lead to? what's in there?" But it wasn't that big a deal to me, and wasn't that interested to know, and so I went on with my day at the parks fine not knowing what's behind that door. The first day I was a CM, I wasn't really that excited to see all the backstage stuff, it's pretty much what I expected it to be, no big deal really, just part of the job.

I think most people would want to see the backstage area. I know I would. I would love to take one of the tours, but just not able to anytime soon(because of the kids ages and the cost). I wouldn't go into an area that I wasn't supposed to be in. As far as thinking it's no big deal once you work somewhere. Again there are things that I do everyday as a nurse that someone else thinks is very cool, but I think is no big deal.

I'd never actually do it at WDW though, I'd be afraid of being banned for life

My son did not work in a park as a CP/CM. But since they bused from their student housing to visit the parks they always popped in the back way somewhere. He liked popping out of nowhere and being in the middle of a park. He popped out of a door near Morocco one day when he met us at Epcot. Never did figure out where he popped from during the Osborne lights that evening. He genuinely enjoyed seeing how they created the magic.
That said it could be 'cause he wasn't CM'ing in a park.

Believe it or not, given the opportunity I would NOT sneak backstage. I might get trampled by marauding head characters with limited visibility! Seriously, I've been on the backstage magic tour, the one that was 7 hours long, and it was a THRILL. But I would not go backstage unauthorized.
