I remember when I was a small boy, I somehow saw on TV a cut of The Sorcerer's Apprentice from the first Fantasia. That was it for me. After that my whole childhood became full of anything Disney-related I could get my hands on, from comic books to vhs tapes.
What was your -or some of your- first disney memories as a child? Share
I remember Disneyland. I am not too sure what my "first" memory is though. I have so many early memories that I have a hard time trying to figure out the time line. Being from Cali, we went to DL at least every other year, if not more.
But I think that the Main Street Electrical Parade might be my first memory. Or Jungle Book in the theater.
What made me an absolute fanatic? My first time to WDW on my honeymoon.
There are a few things that I have stored as my 'first memories'.
I remember watching the Jungle Book at a Drive-in movie theater (during a re-release, not first run) and also listening to my favorite LP records of the "America Sings", "It's a Small World" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" attractions.
The combination made me hooked on Disney. The movie got me hooked on the beautiful animation and the sounds and music from the LP records got me hooked on Walt Disney's wonderful way of 'theming' his attractions.
Really showing my age here, but my first encounter with Disney was as a very young child on Sunday nights watching Shell's Wonderful World of Disney. They were smart enough to air it at 7Pm so little kids could watch it before bedtime. It was an hour long and included a couple of cartoons, the mousekateers, an episode of the Hardy Boys Mystery Series, or Nancy Drew and then a segment of a Disney Movie. They would run them in series so you had to watch each week to keep up. I think they did all of the old Disney movies, The Apple Dumpling Gang, Herbie The Love Bug, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, Bed Knobs And Broomsticks, etc. It would take about a month for them to run through a whole move because you really only got about 20 minutes of it each week. Same for the Hardy Boys. I wish they would bring that back I think it got many people started on Disney at an early age.
Mine is very similar to Jim's. "The Wonderful World of Disney" on Sunday nights. It was my first experience with Disney. Don't remember how young I was but just remember wanting to visit that Castle. It was a life long dream and it came true.
I remember watching Micky Mouse Club after school back in 1958. My first trip to Disneyland was in 1968. I had just graduated high school and we went to visit my grandmother in California. I was so excited when I saw the castle for the first time. I took my 2 granddaughters for their first visit to WDW this last June and it was so magical.
Wow, this one is tough, but I remember getting my first Disney Movie on VHS when I was only a year old (in this case, it was Toy Story from my parents) and My personal favorite memories come from when I was 4 when I would watch the old Winnie The Pooh Storybook Classics shorts on video either with my mom and grandma or both mym mom and dad. We would have an awesome time together! Growing up since then, my grandmother passed away and I always look back fondly to when I was the child in the reclining rocking chair in the living room watching Pooh for hours on end (my first favorite Disney Character).
I was born in 1968 so I too have the memories of Wonderful World of Disney on the TV. I also remember going to the cinema a lot during holidays etc. with my Brother to see such classics as Snow white, jungle book, Aristacats, Robin Hood etc and all the live action features like Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks..... Such fond and wonderful memories
When I was a small kid my grandparents got a video machine and we decided to start having a family night where we would go and rent a video and go up to their house and have dinner and watch the movie and one of the first I remember is Bambi and breaking my heart when his mum dies
Definitely, the original Mickey Mouse Club - yeah, I'm that old, but it was in repeats already by the time I was born. This was followed closely by Disney's presence at the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York. We lived close by and it was only a bus ride away, plus our next door neighbors owned some of the carnival rides there, so we got passes. We went frequently. CoP was there, amongst other things. Finally, Sunday evenings were sacrosanct for watching Walt Disney's Wonderful World Of Color. I loved the "True Life Adventures" as well as the animated features.
