Perhaps a turbulent past has given Disneyland Paris double the reasons to celebrate survival, or maybe it's the French 'Joie de vivre' - either way, the theme park has extended its 15th Year Anniversary Party for another year.

Euro Disney opened its doors in 1992 with expectations of a half million visitors on opening day - barely 50,000 showed up. Two years later, rumours of bankruptcy flew. The magic of refinancing and a new name, Disneyland Paris, brought a pixie dusting of hope. A vicious storm in December 1999 damaged the park and caused a shutdown for several hours in peak season. This followed a storm of labour disputes which resulted in strike action.

With a dose of French tenacity and lessons learned from Disneyland California, Florida's Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland, this fourth and largest "original" style theme park grew up as part of Disneyland Resort Paris, which welcomed 185 million visitors last year.

A 35-minute train ride east of Paris, the park encompasses land a fifth the size of the 'City of Light' and is now touted as the most visited tourist destination in Europe. Those statistics cause a serious stomach drop in Canadians who go to Europe for its history and culture.
But, if you can swallow the idea of a little Mickey in your European vacation, and if Cinderella's is the only castle your kids never tire of seeing, then here's what you'll need to know:
Disneyland Resort Paris includes 54 attractions at two Disney theme parks - Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney Studios, as well as the entertainment and retail area of Disney Village.

What's different in Disneyland Paris? The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction is a little better, the Indiana Jones ride is a roller-coaster with a loop rather than an "adventure ride," the carousel has more charm and hours of operation are shorter in the off-peak seasons.

In 2007, Disney Studios Paris launched a new attraction you won't find anywhere else. Crush's Coaster is a spinning, swirling roller-coaster where riders sit in a turtle shell and cruise the East Australian Current, made believable by an elaborate 'underwater' film set.

Another 15th anniversary 'gift' is the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, a freefall thrill ride that can also be found at other Disney theme parks around the world.
Also new to Disney Studios is the Cars Race Rally where thrill-seekers hop behind the wheel of a convertible for the lure of the fast lane.

The Rock 'n' Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith, new to Disney Studios, launches riders from zero to 100 km/hour in less than three seconds - faster than it's Florida counterpart and California's retro coaster, California Screamin' coaster.

People watching is an attraction in itself, with European sophistication penetrating the American-style park. However, despite a smoking ban put into effect this April, we still saw plenty of guests lighting up outside the designated smoking areas this month.

Apart from new rides, festivities include a celebratory Once Upon a Dream Parade, spectacular fireworks and promotions like "kids under seven stay and play free."
The party, which began in April 2007, continues through March 2009.

For many of you unfamiliar with Universal Studios, they have an awsome Halloween event called Halloween Horror Nights, and this year will be their 18th. On select nights in October, Universal Studios gets transformed into a completely terrifying experience with multiple well themed haunted houses, shows, and scarezones to walk through with scaracters popping out from all over just to scare the living daylights out of you. This year has just begun with the official website being updated from the previous year's to a small teaser site that will soon slowly grow larger and more impressive for the weeks to come. This thread will be used to discuss the ever changing website with it's updates and cool features, as well as the event itself.

For those of you who have gone to HHN before, you'll be pleased to know that this year is completely brand new, and Jack will not be returning again like he has been several years in the past. In 06 was their Sweet 16 where they celebrated the past 16 years of the event, Jack the Clown was there, and last year he was the 'ringleader' in the Carnival of Carnage, so it's great news to hear that he won't be returning for the 18th year of HHN. It's about time for someone new!
This means that there will not be a SpectroMagic parade on any of those days. However, to make up for the temporarily missing nighttime parade there will be a second Disney Dreams Come True parade each day at 7:00 p.m.

Here is a short time line explaining the history and many developments in audio-animatronics technology over the years:

Early 1950s
Walt Disney purchases a mechanical bird while vacationing in Europe. The souvenir becomes the inspiration for Audio-Animatronics technology.

1951
Work begins on “Project Little Man.” Roger Broggie and Wathel Rogers, pioneers in Audio-Animatronicstechnology, create a miniature figure that is programmed with cams, cables and tubes to mimic tap-dancing routines performed by the late Buddy Ebsen.

1963
Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room opens at Disneyland. It’s the first show to feature Audio-Animatronics technology.

1964
The world’s first fully animated human figure, Abraham Lincoln, debuts at the New York World’s Fair in Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. The figure causes a sensation, not just with the audience, but with Disney Imagineers, who were able to complete the figure in half the time they anticipated.

Audio-Animatronics figures are also in three other World’s Fair shows designed and produced by Disney: Carousel of Progress (featuring figures animated using a programming harness, a precursor of today’s motion capture systems), Magic Skyway and it’s a small world.

1964
Two Audio-Animatronics birds, Robin and Umbrella, appear in “Mary Poppins.” Walt Disney reinvests profits from the film to create MAPO, an organization within Walt Disney Imagineering dedicated to creating and innovating Audio-Animatronics figures.

1965
Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln – featuring the Audio-Animatronics figure of Abraham Lincoln (actually, a duplicate since the original was still performing at the World’s Fair) – opens at Disneyland.

1970
Audio-Animatronics technology enters the computer age with the use of DACS (Digital Animation Control System), a computer-controlled playback system for Disney shows and attractions. Imagineers also begin using the Anicon-Animation Console – for animating and programming figures.

1989
The first A-100 Audio-Animatronics figure, the Wicked Witch of the West, debuts as part of The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (then known as Disney-MGM Studios) in Walt Disney World Resort. A-100 figures incorporate compliance technology that gives the characters more fluid and realistic movements.

1992
Pirates of the Caribbean opens at Disneyland Paris. Attraction features sword-fighting pirates figures.

1998
Hopper, the grasshopper from the Disney•Pixar film “A Bug’s Life,” is the most sophisticated Audio-Animatronics figure produced to date. Featuring 74 functions, the character appears in “It’s Tough to be a Bug!”

2002
The first portable, all-electric Audio-Animatronics figure, Meeko, the raccoon from the Disney animated film “Pocahontas,” appears. He’s in a basket carried by Pocahontas.

2003
The first totally autonomous Audio-Animatronics figure, Lucky the Dinosaur, makes his debut, at Disney’s California Adventure.

2006
The yeti, a major element of Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, is the largest and most powerful Audio-Animatronics figure ever created by Walt Disney Imagineering. Standing more than 18 feet tall, the thrust of the yeti’s arm has the equivalent amount of force as a 747 jumbo jet.

2007
The Muppet Mobile Lab, featuring Muppets Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his assistant Beaker, marks the first time that free-roaming Audio-Animatronics characters can interact and converse with each other, as well as with guests they encounter along their way.

2008
Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story Mania! at both Disney’s California Adventure and Disney’s Hollywood Studios marks the first time that anAudio-Animatronics figure features lips with such a wide range of lifelike movements, can remove and re-attach a body part (his ear) and has digitally animated eyes that can look directly at the particular guest with whom he is conversing. Also, since Mr. Potato Head has more lines of dialogue than any Audio-Animatronics figure ever created by Walt Disney Imagineering, it has required more programming hours than any other figure.

Disneyland Did you know? Pirates of the Carribean

Here’s a cheat sheet the Register’s Chantal Lamers wrote in 2006 when the Disneyland Pirates of the Carribbean was refurbished to reflect the Pirates...

Here’s a cheat sheet the Register’s Chantal Lamers wrote in 2006 when the Disneyland Pirates of the Carribbean was refurbished to reflect the Pirates movies.
Here are some subtle and striking additions to the 14-minute revamped Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
Look for a new pair of skeletons playing a “deadlocked” game of chess at crew’s quarters. Chess pieces were intentionally arranged so that neither crew member can win the game.

Imagineers added more bling, about 400,000 new gold coins, to the treasure room as well as an Aztec treasure chest prop from the movie.
As passengers drift through the Ghostly Grotto, a hologram of Bill Nighy’s character, Davy Jones, with his squirmy serpent beard, appears over a misty waterfall.

In the bombardment scene, Blackbeard, the former captain of the Wicked Wench, was replaced by Sparrow’s nemesis, Capt. Barbossa, who is played by Geoffrey Rush in the movie. Effects were added so that passengers can feel the explosions of cannon balls pounding the water’s surface.
Passengers get their first glimpse of Johnny Depp’s character, Captain Jack Sparrow (taking cover between two women’s clothing mannequins) at the well where pirates are dunking the mayor for information on Sparrow’s whereabouts. Look up from there for more enhanced silhouettes of two men sword fighting.

Sparrow pops up again in the chase scene, where he peaks out of a barrel over the shoulder of the “Poopy Pirate” holding the map and the key to the booty.

Fans might remember that a scene was altered in 1997, from the pirate admiring a pair of women’s panties to a chicken leg.

Look past Sparrow at a pair of pirates, who’ve looted gold and jewels, each being chased by a woman. Before the revamp, the pirates chased the women for platters of food.

Passengers get the ending to the tale and their third glimpse of Sparrow at the ramp out of the cavern. Sparrow, who replaced two pirates making an ill-fated attempt to hoist the treasure away, lounges in the town’s golden fortune and sings “Yo ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me).”
Even though it was established in 1994, the official grand opening was not until two years later.
WHAT IS CELEBRATION?
It is the first planned community developed by The Walt Disney Company. While EPCOT Center was originally planned as an "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow", we all know that financial as well as other considerations dictated that the dream of Walt Disney be changed from a city to a new gated attraction. Celebration will be a true planned community including a downtown, health center, school, post office, town hall, golf course, single family homes, townhouses and apartments. Disney used the services of top-name architects in developing the plans for Celebration. The master plan architects were Cooper, Robertson & Partners and Robert A.M. Stern Architects.
Celebration is located on the south side of Route 192, five miles south of Walt Disney World at the intersection of I-4 and U.S. Highway 192 East

URAYASU, Japan (AFP) — Tokyo Disney Resort on Wednesday offered girls the chance to become the princess of their choice as it unveiled a new 415-million-dollar hotel.

Tokyo Disneyland Hotel, to open on July 8, houses the "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique" which can turn girls aged three to nine into Cinderella, Snow White or other screen princess.

The full service, including costumes, shoes, make-up, hair-styling, manicure and professional photography costs 25,000 yen (235 dollars).

The hotel's cheapest room is 31,000 yen during the off-season in January and February, while the top-floor premiere suite is priced at 500,000 yen a night.

The nine-storey venture is the third official hotel in the sprawling compound in the suburbs of the Japanese capital.

Oriental Land Co., which operates the Disney resort in Japan, invested a total of 44 billion yen (415 million dollars) to open the hotel, according to a company spokeswoman.

Tokyo Disney Resort is going under a major expansion this year, the 25th anniversary of its opening as the first Disneyland outside the United States, with a permanent Cirque du Soleil opening in October.

Unlike some other Disney parks overseas, Tokyo Disney Resort has been consistently successful, with trips to the complex almost a rite of passage for Japanese children.
